Meh... (Club related)

Thu Jun 1, 2006, 2:28 PM
As I said anyone can create a club on any topic they want even if its a duplicate. Although it would be better to have one club than two.
So came the response from one of the DA staffers. I needed to make sure that if its okay for duped clubs to co-exist with one another. Though they do agree that there should be really only one club of a subject.

In the months after I joined, which was in 2003, DA seemed to be really uptight about clubs back then. They didn't like all the duped clubs. When some moron created a duped Super Sonic club that came after mine, I was advised by ~myphrill that I go in the DA Help chat room and ask about it. Their initial response was "It's not recommended." When asked about what I should do with the duped club: "Do nothing. That club will probably die off."

Since then, I have been going by with what they said when I encountered more duped clubs. I was successful in shutting down each of them, either by inviting their creators to be co-owners of my original clubs or just by convincing them to shut down, or just let them die off. There was one I couldn't shut down, and that was Shadow Fan Artists. So in turn, I closed down mine instead and became a co-owner of that club.

So here I am again facing another club conflict, this time involving Silver. I decided to re-confirm what they said by asking them. And obviously, its different this time.

It seems that deviantART has fallen to a very common syndrome that other community sites had. I call it "the Yahoo Groups syndrome," in which tons and tons of duped clubs co-exist on a single community site. It seems that DA has allowed this to happen.

In my opinion, this syndrome takes the point away from creating and owning a club. I mean, why own a club of a particular subject when there are tons and tons of the same thing already? I really do not get that at all. IMO, there really should be only one club. So what if its gotten big? Just hire a co-owner. It's what I would do. There's really no incentive to create a duped club, unless of course, the original club is long dead.

To sum that up, I just don't feel right owning a club when I know there's another club that exists, especially if that club is gaining more popularity, therefore rendering my club more useless every time.

*sighs heavily* Maybe I should just give up on the club business entirely...

And here I was gonna note you asking if my new club could affiliate with the ones you own.

Clubs might have teh same TOPIC, btu that doesn't make them teh same unless the people who created it put no thought into them. Each club should be able to offer something special. That was my approach when I agreed to co-found a Tales of Symphonia club. I didn't mind, but I refused to let it just be like anything else, so I thought up features I'd nopt seen ina ny of teh clubs I'd seen. Those feature may attract some and turn off others. That's what makes my club dif from others. Its not stealing from anyone, just offering something that some people might enjoy to try.

I don't know your other clubs, but your ss one always struck me as a core-type club. One that was the primary type of ss club. Which is why Iw as a little surprised that you included Super Shadow so highly in it, but that's besides the point.

Okay I hit submit accidentally somehow...

Anyways, if your's really was the first, teh core, and not a dupe of anyone else's, then its too important to abandon. Plain and simple. its the ebnchmark for the entire ss club community.

That's how I see it. A community of clubs with the base at its core and variations that have additional specialized interests for certain people to enjoy specifically. Dupes can become this type of important branch club if given teh chance. If they were just started for the heck of it and never grow then you have no worries about them stealing members from you, do you?

I can understand the "different approach" thing. If you mean like a "Super Sonic Cosplaying as Someone Else" club, then yeah, I'd accept that.

But all the duped clubs that I have encountered didn't look like "specialized interest" clubs, therefore they had the same approach as mine: being a "core" club, in your words.
:iconimperfect-chaos:
Which means they have nothing new to offer besides management. Management is also important. If done lazily then it has no way to attract people from your's. If done in a new exciting way then its a speacilty for people to choose from. Have the core merge the lazy ones but let the dynamic ones see how far they can go. If they are not special ina ny way then the core has no need to worry about them, even if they refuse merging. AT the least you can still affiliate with them, causing people who find that one to come to you anyways.

If you aren't leaving teh club business, could I affiliate with you after all?

Meh, management means nothing to me. As long as its a club with the same approach as mine, I'll still not feel right about it... That's the way it is for me.

Management determines whether the club has special features available to the members is all I'm saying. You have those parts dedicated to theme songs for one thing. I like those.

Why are you so bothered about a bloody deviant club? Jesus, it's only the Internet =p

Seriously though, you never see other sonic clybs bickering at eachother about club repeats. There was 2 blaze clubs running at one point and that went fine. Theres SO Many soniamy clubs I coulnd't count. They go fine.

Serisouly. Chill out and stop being all *sigh* about it babe.

I'd become a co-owner, but then I'd do nothing as one. Such is the case with SFA.
